Quite often Jesus deliberately addressed issues that diminished the number of onlookers. It was COMMITMENT that thinned the ranks. ~Swindoll

"If we want God INSIDE the prayer closet, God must have us OUTSIDE the prayer closet. We can't pray TO God and not live FOR God." ~EM Bounds

We hear lots about AUTHENTICITY today; but authenticity, theologically speaking, isn't being true 2 who YOU are, but being true 2 who GOD is

Many r called, few r chosen (Mat 22:14). Fewer still are called, chosen AND faithful (Rev 17:14). FAITHFULNESS is required by God (1Co 4:2)!

8 Reasons for Loss of Holiness Identity (Keith Drury, Indiana Wesleyan University professor, in "The Holiness Movement: Dead or Alive?") ...

(1) We wanted to be respectable. (2) We have plunged into the evangelical mainstream. (3) We failed to convince the younger generation. ...

(4) We quit making holiness the main issue. (5) We lost the lay people. (6) We over-reacted against the abuses of the past. ...

(7) We adopted church-growth thinking without theological thinking. (8) We did not notice when the battle line moved. // Pentecostal Herald

"My temptations come out of situations where I am dissatisfied. The surest guarantee against failure is to be content in God." ~ D. Willard

Leonard Sweet on PASSION: "I want the passion of Eugene Ormandy, who dislocated his shoulder while conducting the Philadelphia orchestra. >

< I want this type of passion. Too many Christians haven't had a passion great enough to dislocate their coffee lid, let alone a shoulder."

There is no excellence w/o passion, w/o intensity of intentionality. When U live out of your passion U never 'work' a day in your life. ~ LS

Each generation needs to start fresh, but not from scratch. When the present is separated from the past, the future is in jeopardy. ~ Sweet

Augustine liked to say that God is younger than us all. If Jesus is the youngest person around, can we say we think like Jesus? ~ Len Sweet

Unexpressed gratitude is received like ingratitude. "In-gratitude" might be gratitude just kept "in-side." So if you're grateful, tell them!

Charlie Chaplin, asked the secret of his success, said "sheer perseverance to the point of madness. " They said that of Rhoda, in Acts 12:15.

< after that is exhausted, they wither and die." ~ Jewish sociologist Will Herberg // Too many 2nd-Gen Apostolics have "Cut Flower Syndrome"

The current cultish emphasis on the NEW, the NOW & the NIFTY is just the 'Cut Flower Syndrome' of being beautiful but rootless. It's a TRAP.

Many believers take up the chant "Let my people go" w/o finishing the phrase "that they may serve Me." But a runaway slave is still a slave.

Received a sad letter today from a minister defending himself. Direct quote: "Why I cannot submit." That says it all, in one scary sentence.

SUB-MISSION is your mission 'under' someone else's mission - and a submitted spirit can only be seen when you disagree with your leadership.

SUBMISSION isn't about the authority of your leader, or even your obedience to directives. It's about your acceptance of God's plan for YOU.

The secret to submission is SILENCE. Can I submit w/o telling my side of the story? Do I trust God to fight 4 me or do I want to fight 4 me?

"Roman legions were formed of citizens who submitted to rigid discipline & knew that in that submission lay their strength." ~ Goldwin Smith

"Do U claim 2 love your church, but don't attend or support faithfully? True gratitude begins where my sense of entitlement ends." ~ Furtick

The Scripture teaches TITHING to secure not the tithe, but the tither; not the gift, but the giver; not your MONEY for God, but YOU for God.

"If everyone followed your pattern of giving, would your church receive a Token, a Tip, or a Tithe? Or could it even survive?" ~ Brian Kluth

“One of the great uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove at the Last Day that prayerlessness was not from lack of time.” ~ John Piper

"Jesus did not go home after the Sermon on the Mount and ask the disciples, 'How do you think that went? Did it need more humor?'" ~ Ortberg

Your relationship with God puts something IN you, but your ministry is supposed to take something OUT of you. It's for OTHERS, not for YOU!

GOT TRIALS? GOT JESUS! // "PROSPERITY is the blessing of the Old Testament; ADVERSITY is the blessing of the New Testament." ~ Francis Bacon

If you don't make DISCIPLES, you create co-dependent Christian consumers who eventually leave for the next 'Wal-Mart church' that pops up. >

< It's relatively easy to create a fan base of consumers for a Sunday performance. It's another thing to grow committed DISCIPLES." ~ Jordan

DISCIPLES are hand-crafted, not mass-produced. Making disciples is not the job of the PASTOR but the assignment of every CHRISTIAN. ~ Jordan

Worry most about the MESSAGE you preach, less about the METHOD you use, none about the MODEL you follow. / "Stop Copying - You're Not Xerox"

Success is our worst enemy in the church world. Once a model becomes famous, conferences franchise it. But a clone is not a church! ~ Jordan

VISION is the place 2 begin every discussion pertaining to CHANGE. Start the discussion anywhere else & you will experience resistance. ~ AS

You should never begin a conversation about CHANGE by addressing where you are NOW. You should always begin with where you want to BE. ~ AS

VISION: "A God-ordained vision is not simply something that COULD be. It's something you are convinced MUST be." ~ Andy Stanley, Deep & Wide

Ministry MODELS are a means to an end. Don't fall in love with the MODEL at the expense of the MISSION. The MISSION is the GREAT COMMISSION!

Ministry models that don't SUPPORT the mission of the church eventually IMPEDE the mission or BECOME the mission. ~ A. Stanley / Deep & Wide

"Marry your MISSION; date your MODEL. Fall in love with your VISION. Stay mildly infatuated with your APPROACH." ~ Andy Stanley, Deep & Wide

We need a church CULTURE so vision-centric, so Great Commission minded, that we feel more anxiety about losing FOCUS than changing METHODS.

Could the tired cliche "Real Church for Real People" be code for "Compromised Christianity for Consumer Culture"? Maybe I'm getting old. :-)

"COME as you are" is a prime precept for evangelism (John 1:46, 4:29) "STAY as you are" is a poor pretext for backsliding! (2 Peter 1:3-10)

"We don't tailor the CONTENT of church services to please non-Christians, but we do tailor the EXPERIENCE in order to reach them." ~ Stanley

We're more inspired by people with faith that endures a NO from God than those who claim their faith arm-twisted a YES out of Him. ~ Stanley

5 FAITH CATALYSTS: Practical Teaching, Private Disciplines, Personal Ministry, Providential Relationships, Pivotal Circumstances. (Stanley)

The casualty in a church 4 church people is GRACE. The casualty in liberal churches is TRUTH. Jesus was "full of grace AND truth." ~ Stanley

Jesus didn't strike a BALANCE between grace and truth. He brought the full measure of BOTH. "Neither do I condemn thee; go and sin no more."

It's easy to create an ALL-TRUTH church model. It may be even easier to create an ALL-GRACE model. But Jesus didn't leave us either option.

We are not 'mistakers' in need of CORRECTION. We are sinners in need of a SAVIOR. We need more than a second CHANCE. We need a second BIRTH.

"In Jesus, there was no conflict between GRACE & TRUTH. We see Him acknowledging the full implications of sin, yet not condemning sinners. >

< TRUTH isn't given to isolate people from God. And GRACE doesn't dumb down sin to make it more palatable. Grace doesn't have to." ~ Stanley

"In the beginning the church was a gloriously messy movement with a laser-focused message and a global mission." ~ Andy Stanley, Deep & Wide

Your sermon needs a BIG IDEA ('a sentence as clear as crystal' ~ Howett). If you can't TWEET it, you're probably not ready to PREACH it! :-)

Let me write the songs of a nation & I care not who writes its laws ~ Plato / Worship leaders must be students of the Word ~ @LindelAnderson

"A lot of people's ministries are like poor photographs - they are publicly over-exposed and privately under-developed." ~ Howard Hendricks

DISCERNMENT is not simply a matter of telling the difference between right and wrong, but between right and almost right. ~ Charles Spurgeon

"The average American church has nothing to say to the world. Her once robust shout of assurance has faded away to an apologetic whisper. >

Ministry and serving others are divine distractions that free us from the tyranny of our overly magnified needs. ~ Peter Haas / Pharisectomy

"DISCIPLESHIP is much more than the acquisition of biblical INFORMATION; rather, it is the adaptation of a biblical LIFESTYLE." ~ Peter Haas

Whenever the word COMPROMISE is tossed around, it's sadly all too common to hear it from someone overcommitted to their personal preference.

Most people ATTACKING the Body of Christ do so under the pretense of PROTECTING it. Ironically, most wolves see themselves as "super sheep."

BRIDE HATERS: People who are so opinionated about the local church that they become functionally incompatible with the local church. ~ Haas

Many top Christian authors aren't even practicing pastors! They're DECONSTRUCTING church without any experience in RECONSTRUCTING it. ~ Haas

Attention Preachers! "As the musical theologian Mary Poppins once said, 'Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.'" ~ Peter Haas

In light of the anemic, anti-biblical lives of most 21st-century "Christians," I pray I'm dramatically different from BOTH :-) @waynefrancis

Church attendance in America: Pollsters report 40%. Actual head count is 17.7%. By 2050, projected to be 11.7%. (Hadaway, Marler, Chaves) >

UNITY: "You & I don't need to see eye to eye to walk hand in hand. Biblical unity is not thinking ALIKE but thinking TOGETHER." ~ Peter Haas

Speaking the truth is easy; earning the right to speak the truth into someone's life is another thing altogether. ~ Peter Haas, Pharisectomy

Christianity is not merely a MESSAGE, it's a LIFESTYLE. It has to be CAUGHT as well as TAUGHT. So the question is, "How contagious are YOU?"

A great statistical predictor of spiritual growth is how many close Christian friends you have. FAITHFULNESS to a local church is important!

The Bible isn't a list of REQUIREMENTS; rather, it's a list of RESULTS after experiencing God's love. ~ Peter Haas, Author of "Pharisectomy"

The difference between a Pharisee & a Christian isn't that one teaches the Law & the other doesn't. It's the MOTIVE behind their obedience.

The Moral Law, which condemned us outside of Christ, has now become our Worship List. Obedience is now our way to say THANKS to God! ~ Haas

"Biblical repentance is a REACTION to God's kindness, not [merely] an ACTION to earn it." (Romans 2:4) ~ Author Peter Haas in "Pharisectomy"

GUILT can be a strong motivator for a season; that's why people use it. But the Bible offers a far more powerful motivator: unmerited GRACE.

"Righteousness is not the REWARD of living rightly. It's the unmerited GIFT that irresistibly results in right living." (Titus 2:11-12, 3:5)

MESSAGE IS SACRED; METHODS ARE NOT // "The assumptions a team has held the longest or the most deeply are the likeliest to be its undoing. >

You can be RIGHT, or you can be MARRIED; take your pick. A successful marriage is a contest to see which spouse is going to LOSE the most. >

< All marriages start selfishly: "I like the way you make ME feel." Romantic relationships can be the ultimate in narcissistic expression! >

< But when you get 2 ME's together, something has to give or the relationship self-destructs. If you constantly need to WIN you will LOSE. >

< Successful spouses COMPETE to see who can listen to, care for, change oneself for, serve, forgive, honor and accept their mate the MOST. >

< The enemy of a good marriage is the idea that "losing" is weak. Having a marriage where losing is the NORM is anti-media & anti-culture! >

FELLOWSHIP (Greek "koinonia") refers to the sharing of LIFE. Our modern equivalent would probably be the term, "hanging out." ~ Joe McKeever

A doctor's stethoscope can hear a patient's heartbeat. The pulse of a local church is the sound of FELLOWSHIP after service. Listen closely!

We need PLANNED fellowship, but we also need INFORMAL fellowship. Where 2 or more believers are, FELLOWSHIP should take place. ~ J. McKeever

Guests rarely use the word "FELLOWSHIP" but that's what they're looking for - feeling welcome, finding friends, the PERSONALITY of a church.

FELLOWSHIP: There are 31 different "one another" commandments in the New Testament. When we love the Lord, we will treasure His people. ~ JM

"It’s hard to have a holiness movement when much of what we ARE is merely a reaction against who we WERE." ~ K. Drury / http://t.co/awTgEqgv

In our quest for respectability, we lost our willingness to be "different" - not just from the world, but from average Christianity. ~ Drury

To correct past abuses, we've overreacted. Some were ingrown & never touched the world, so we assimilated into the world & seldom touch God!

In a movement, a dominating priority makes all other matters secondary. "Balanced movement" is an oxymoron; movements are radical by nature.

Holiness isn't a "primary issue" for boomer/buster preachers. At best, it's preached as an attractive accessory, not an essential necessity.

"The old riddle was prophetic: What’s the difference between the church & the world? Answer: About ten years. Perhaps even less." ~ K. Drury

At the time of Constantine's Edict of Milan (AD 313), 10% of the Roman Empire had converted to Christianity; but that took nearly 300 years.

Less than 100 years after AD 313, most of the other 90% had "converted." The church believed this rapid growth was a sign of God's approval.

Accepting this premise, the church adopted virtually any practice that brought "growth" - including those loathsome to the early Christians.

"Thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness." (Jesus, in Mt. 3:15) // Jesus was already righteous, so why did He need to be baptized? >

< Jesus left His righteousness in the water; so when I am baptized, I bury my unrighteousness & rise in His righteousness! ~ Keith Sjostrand

Noah found GRACE in the eyes of the Lord, but that didn't save him. Grace gave him the PLAN of salvation but he still had to get in the ARK.

21st century Christians label as HERESY many doctrines that 1st century Christians taught, & vice versa. Who are the REAL heretics? ~ Bercot

In modern Christianity, WATER BAPTISM is often regarded as rather insignificant in the process of salvation. Not so among early Christians:

IRENAEUS: baptism is regeneration to God. CYPRIAN: new life in the bath of saving water. CLEMENT: washing by which we cleanse away our sins.

"They teach adultery by acting it out. How do we expect our youth to respond when they see that these things are practiced without shame, >

< and that everyone eagerly watches?" ~ Lactantius (AD 240-320), on why early Christians didn't attend the theatre (via author David Bercot)

"How can it be right to look at things that are wrong to do? How can things that defile a man when they go out of his mouth not defile him >

< when going in through his eyes and ears?" ~ Tertullian (AD 160-225), on why early Christians didn't attend the theatre (via David Bercot)

The early Christians shunned the theatre with disgust. Who determines YOUR standards 4 entertainment & media today? Is it CULTURE or CHRIST?

RICK WARREN: "Our culture has accepted 2 huge lies: (1) If you disagree with someone's lifestyle, that is equal to fearing or hating them. >

< (2) To love someone means you agree with all they believe or do. Nonsense! You don't have to compromise convictions to be compassionate."

< "In the middle of my moaning marathon, God spoke. 'That was a good question Barb asked. I'd like to know the answer to that one Myself.'"

FORGIVENESS is surrendering my "right" to hurt you for hurting me ... not a one-time action of my FEELINGS, but a continual choice of my WILL.

DIVORCE from same root as DIVERT, “to turn away.” Letting distance grow between you and spouse permits “spirit of divorce” in your marriage.

Most Bible characters met with failure & survived. In fact, their failure & repentance led to greater love for the God of the second chance.

MY PAST: In Christ through salvation. // MY PRESENT: Like Christ through sanctification. // MY FUTURE: With Christ through glorification.

Christ is PRESENT in all Christians. Christ in PROMINENT in some Christians. But tragically, Christ is PREEMINENT in only a few Christians.

JESUS is not humanity deified. He is not the Godhead humanized. He is God AND man. He is all that God is AND all that God created man to be.

JESUS had no servants, yet they called Him Master; no degrees, yet they called Him Teacher; no medicines, yet they called Him Healer; >

< no army, yet kings feared Him. He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world; He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him. >

IT'S ALL IN JESUS ... riches if U R poor, honor if U R despised, friendship if U R forsaken, help if U R injured, mercy if U have failed, >

< joy if U R miserable, protection if U R in danger, deliverance if U R captive, life if U R mortal, & ALL THINGS if U have nothing at all.

Every man approaching Christ seems to feel the same thing: He is the ideal of that man. To the artist Christ is the One altogether lovely. >

< To the educator, He is the master teacher. To the philosopher, the wisdom of God. To the lonely a brother. To the sorrowful a comforter. >

< To the bereaved, He is the resurrection and the life. To the sinner, He is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. My Jesus!

More than 1/4 of the Bible is predictive prophecy; about 1/3 is yet to be fulfilled. Both OT and NT prophesy the return of Jesus Christ. >

< 1800+ OT refs & 17 OT books refer to this theme. Of 260 NT chapters, there are 300+ refs to the Lord’s return, or 1 of every 30 verses. >

< 23 of 27 NT books refer to this great event. // For every prophecy on the FIRST coming of Christ, there are 8 on Christ’s SECOND coming!

In a landmark 1972 case, U.S. Supreme Court ruled religious CONVICTIONS are protected by First Amendment, but religious PREFERENCES are not.

First, Court stated "one cannot hold a belief unless one can DESCRIBE that belief." Second, it required “beliefs must be INDIVIDUALLY held.”

Third, Court declared “beliefs fall into two categories, convictions or PREFERENCES (beliefs one will CHANGE under certain circumstances)."

Fourth, it said “if you require OTHERS to stand with you before you stand, your beliefs, no matter how strongly held, are just preferences."

FInally, U.S. Supreme Court emphatically declared "you have no right to say you have a conviction unless you live it with some CONSISTENCY."

Before we state that something we believe is a CONVICTION, we must be prepared to say that its opposite is a SIN. Even the courts know that!

In a time when the family is under attack, the real danger is IDOLIZING the family. We hear “Family First” and are tempted to say “Amen.” >

< Jesus will have none of this. When family is first, God is second. But families do better when we put them SECOND, behind God. ~ Kenyon

Jesus explicitly rules out "easy believism." To apply His demands only to a "higher class" of Christians blunts the force of His message. >

< It makes room for a cheap faith that may be exercised with no impact on the fleshly life of sin. That is NOT saving faith. ~ J. MacArthur

There was no "easy believism" in Paul's presentation of the Gospel. DECISION must be accompanied by DEVOTION, & SALVATION by SANCTIFICATION.

CONVICTION is a determinative belief, something believed so strongly it affects the way you live. Spiritual growth = increased conviction.

16 of 38 parables about money. 1 of 10 verses in NT about money. Bible offers about 500 verses on prayer, less on faith, over 2000 on money.

Will you be known as one who accumulated treasures on EARTH you couldn't KEEP, or one who invested treasures in HEAVEN you couldn't LOSE?

When Jesus warns us not to store up treasures on earth, it's not because wealth MIGHT be lost - it's because wealth will ALWAYS be lost. >

< Either wealth leaves us while we LIVE, or we leave it when we DIE. Storing up earthly treasures isn't simply WRONG, it's STUPID. ~ Alcorn

If I'm not satisfied with what I HAVE, I won't be satisfied with what I WANT. The richest person doesn't have the MOST, but needs the LEAST.

A man with a discontented heart has the attitude that everything he does for God is too MUCH, and everything God does for him is too LITTLE.

"The Christian is the most contented man IN the world, but he is the least contented WITH the world. He is like a traveler in an inn, >

< perfectly satisfied with the inn and its accommodation, but putting out of all consideration the idea of making it his home." ~ Spurgeon

A Christian is NOT free to do what the Bible forbids, and a person who lovingly points this out to you is NOT a legalist for having done so!

The ceremonial law was a SHADOW of what was to come in Christ. It is in every respect a PROPHECY of the life which only Christ can bring. >

< The Law declares 1 of 7 days HOLY, the Spirit all 7. The Law declares 1 of 12 tribes to be PRIESTS, the Spirit the whole congregation. >

< The law demands 1/10 of His people's possessions, the Spirit translates US to become God’s possession with ALL we have. ~ Pieter Verhoef

"So what is the place of the Law in the life of the Christian? Simply this: We are no longer under the Law to be condemned by it; however >

"Love provides the motive for obeying the commands of the law, but the law provides specific direction for exercising love." ~ Jerry Bridges

We are NOT "legalists" when we keep the Law, because we do not look to the Law for life. Rather, the Law shows we have life in our hearts. >

< We keep the Law simply to be obedient to Christ and show Him how much we love Him. OBEDIENCE IS A FAR CRY FROM LEGALISM. ~ C.M. McMahon

We do NOT keep the Law to be saved. Rather, in keeping the Law we show ourselves to ALREADY be saved. We are FREE to keep the Law! ~ McMahon

No man can preach the GOSPEL who does not preach the LAW. Law is the needle, & you cannot draw the thread of gospel through a man's heart >

< unless you first send the needle of law to make way for it. If men do not understand the law, they will not feel that they are sinners. >

< And if they are not consciously sinners, they will never value the sin offering. There is no healing a man till the law has wounded him, >

< no making alive till the law has slain. ~ Spurgeon // The LAW by which God rules us is as dear to Him as the GOSPEL by which He saves us.

A false gospel offers salvation from Hell but not sin, & escape from God’s wrath w/o leaving worldliness. It's an eternally fatal deception!

The first evangelists never assured unconverted people that God loves them. This isn't to say He does not love them in any way whatsoever. >

< But the undeniable fact is, the love of God for man was a total non-factor in the evangelistic preaching recorded in the New Testament. >

< In the book of Acts for example, the greatest manual for evangelism that ever existed, the word “love” is never even used! (Daryl Wingerd)

1/2 Could a mariner sit idle if he heard the drowning cry? Could a doctor sit in comfort and just let his patients die?

"We are to evangelize not because it is easy, not because we may be successful, but simply because Christ has commanded us." ~ Leighton Ford

< Too often, the advocates of 'relevant evangelism' veer over that slippery slope into becoming advocates of 'irrelevant non-evangelism.' >

We do not fail in evangelism if we faithfully tell the gospel to one who is not converted; we fail only if we do not tell the gospel at all.

"Evangelism is the perpetual task of the whole church, and not merely the peculiar hobby of certain of its members." ~ E. Wilson Carlisle

"Our drive to evangelize and our desire to grow numerically have led us to 'use' worship as a tool to reach the lost. We have gone so far >

The theory of the carnal Christian has been invented to accommodate those who have made a decision but who bear no marks of the new birth.

People imagine that dying to self makes one miserable. But it just the opposite. It is the refusal to die to self that makes one miserable.

"When God's will crosses man's will, somebody has to die." ~ Leitch // "Until a man is nothing, God can make nothing out of him." ~ Luther

Big difference between "Christ was crucified for me" & "I am crucified with Christ." One delivers from sin's PENALTY, one from sin's POWER.

MODESTY: Dress not to be admired or desired. Is your motive to attract attention to yourself or to please Jesus Christ who lives within you?

Experience is dangerous ground on which 2 test truth b/c experiences vary & interpretations of experiences, however genuine, may be wrong. >

< Scripture clearly says, “test the spirits, whether they are of God” (1 Jn 4:1). No human can test spiritual realities w/o the Word of God.

Any part of the BODY can only be explained in reference to the whole. Any part of the BIBLE can only be explained in reference to the whole.

We must worship in spirit and in TRUTH. Worship that is not grounded in the truth of God's Word is but an emotional encounter with oneself.

Imagination is the hotbed where sin is too often hatched. Guard your thoughts, and there will be little fear about your actions. ~ J.C. Ryle

You are what you sing. Shallow theology will produce shallow music, and shallow music will produce shallow theology. ~ Daniel Block // Amen

We must not speak long ABOUT God with our mind before we speak TO God from our heart. Stir a lot of prayer into the stew of your theology!

Worship uninformed by truth invariably leads 2 idolatry or fanaticism. If we don’t know the God we enjoy, we may be enjoying the wrong god!

If theology doesn't lead to worship, it fails. Theology w/o doxology is idolatry. The only theology worth studying is one that can be sung!

So strong was Jesus’ zeal that His friends thought He had abandoned common sense & His enemies charged Him with having a demon (Mk 3:21-22).

"As long as we are content to live without revival, we will." (L Ravenhill) // "The love of tradition is an enemy to revival." (R Roberts)

No religious excitement merits the name REVIVAL if there is no profound sense of sin at its heart. God's Presence makes people aware of sin.

To be broken is the beginning of revival. It is painful, it is humiliating, it is the only way. NOT I, BUT CHRIST - and a ‘C’ is a bent ‘I.’

John Piper - "When I pray for revival I pray first for the most radical thing: The utter devotion and allegiance of your hearts to Christ. >

< That you would love Him so deeply that His coming would be your great hope, death would be gain & life would be for Christ & His kingdom."

"Have you noticed how much praying for revival has been going on of late – and how little revival has resulted? >

< I believe the problem is that we have been trying to substitute praying for obeying, and it simply will not work. >

< To pray for revival while ignoring the plain precepts laid down in Scripture is to waste a lot of words and get nothing for our trouble. >

< Prayer will become effective when we stop using it as a substitute for obedience." ~ A.W. Tozer // Amen to that!

Salvation is not verified by a past act, but by present fruitfulness. (MacArthur) // Where there is no fruit, there may be no root. (Storms)

Just as the apple is not the cause of the apple tree, but the fruit of it, so good works are not the cause of salvation, but the sign of it.

Fruit-bearing is not a matter of being strong, only a matter of being attached to the Vine. Fruit is borne not by TRYING, but by ABIDING.

How can we defend choices that take us right to the EDGE of sin, yet be reluctant 2 make radical choices that put DISTANCE between us & sin?

Your answer reveals your choices & priorities. King David’s answer (Ps. 27:4) reveals why God could say, “This man’s heart beats like mine.”

How would you finish this sentence? “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; ____.” What is the desire of your heart?

Dr. Henry Cloud - When a WISE person is presented with the truth, they adjust themselves to match the truth, and they THANK the messenger. >

< When a FOOLISH person is presented with the truth, they try to adjust the truth to match themselves, & they try to SHOOT the messenger. >

< When an EVIL person is presented with the truth, they threaten destruction against the truth AND the messenger (most dangerous 2 leaders).

We have made it an offense to admonish people about their sin. If only we were as loathe to COMMIT sin as we are to CONFRONT it! ~ N. DeMoss

I cannot trifle with the evil that killed my best Friend. I must be holy 4 His sake. How can I live in sin when He died to save me from it?

"Sin FORSAKEN is the best evidence of sin FORGIVEN." ~ J.C. Ryle // "If you do not die TO sin, you shall die FOR sin." ~ C.H. Spurgeon

The Bible records one instance of a death-bed conversion (a penitent thief) – one that none may despair, and only one that none may presume.

10 men in Bible said "I have sinned" but only 5 repented: David (2 Sam 12), Nehemiah (Neh 1), Job (Job 42), Micah (Mic 7), Prodigal (Luk 15)

A criminal may weep as his sentence is read, not b/c he has come to love righteousness, but b/c his freedom to do unrighteousness is gone. >

< That kind of weeping is not true repentance, and it does not lead to radical obedience. Fearing punishment is not the same as loving God.

Confession by itself is not repentance. Confession moves the lips; repentance moves the heart. Naming an evil is not the same as leaving it.

Because human beings are so fickle, God knew that a CONTRACT would not be enough to keep marriages together, so He made marriage a COVENANT.

CONTRACT says, "I will if YOU WILL." COVENANT says, "I will even if YOU WON'T (or don't, or can't)." A covenant marriage stays together!

And because GOD made a COVENANT with ME, I've made a covenant with HIM! I WILL serve Him even if HE WON'T bless me, heal me or deliver me.

MERCY doesn't give us what we always deserved. GRACE gives us what we never deserved. MERCY says, "I pity you." GRACE says, "I pardon you."

MERCY deals with the results of sin; GRACE deals with the sin itself. One extends relief, the other pardon; one cures, the other cleanses.

GRACE isn't simply leniency when we have sinned. Grace is the enabling gift of God not to sin. Grace is power, not just pardon. ~ John Piper

Hell had feared this moment for centuries, for millennia, ever since creation! Out of darkness at 3:00 PM came the cry, “It is finished!” >

< In Greek it is just one word - “TELEO” or “FINISHED!” In this 1 word lies the consummation of OT truth and the germination of NT truth. >

< TELEO / FINISHED! - used by ancient artists & writers to describe their “masterpiece” when it was completed, nothing else could be added >

< TELEO / FINISHED! - used by ancient servants to report, “I have completed my assigned task, I have finished the work I was sent to do" >

< TELEO / FINISHED! - used by ancient Jewish priests to declare, “It’s perfect!” when they found sacrificial lamb faultless & without spot >

< TELEO / FINISHED! - used by ancient merchants to mark “Paid in full” on a bill that was no longer owing because the debt had been paid! >

< This word sent a thrill running through Heaven & a tremor running through Hell – “FINISHED!” // Not "I am finished," but "It is finished!"

De 21:18-21 (CEV) A father and mother may have a rebellious son who refuses to obey them … The men of the town will stone that son to death.

Jesus and rabbis told story of a prodigal son, but He changed the ending! In their version the son died; in His, the son was welcomed home!

Jesus’ version was controversial. Tertullian had fears of "renegades" abusing it: “Who will worry about losing what can easily be regained?”

God has some children who have made horrible mistakes - but He welcomes them home, even at the risk of offending obedient sons who will not!

One son LEFT the house and wasted his inheritance; the other son STAYED in the house and wasted his inheritance. There were 2 prodigal sons!

We fear letting people off the hook, we are resentful of UNEARNED LOVE - unless we are the one to whom the Father is running with open arms!

The elder brother needed to return to the Father’s house just as much as his younger brother! He had nothing to lose by a prodigal's return!

One prodigal is REBELLIOUS, the other is RELIGIOUS (he had never enjoyed a party!). What the Father wanted from both sons was RELATIONSHIP!

Jesus' teaching was more about the Father's LOVE than the Prodigal's SIN. The son's sin was HORRIBLE; the Father's love was UNCONDITIONAL.

Lu 15:20-24 (MES) When he was still a long way off his father saw him. His heart pounding, he ran out, embraced him & kissed him. // GRACE!

The wages of sin is DEATH – a boy starving in a pigpen. But the gift of God is eternal LIFE – a welcome home party that will blow your mind!

I read one of my favorite books to our church family tonight - "A Tale of Three Kings," by Gene Edwards - unusual service, powerful message!

"It's a story about brokenness, an example 4 any man who would dare lead God's people. The book has been the North Star of my entire life. >

< It has been called a masterpiece of Christian literature (not my words). No one gets credit for having written 'A Tale of Three Kings.' >

< It addresses an issue all Christians have found themselves in. It was written in just two days." ~ Gene Edwards on "A Tale of Three Kings"

[Absalom] stood, eyes blazing. "If I were in responsibility, this is what I would do …" And with these words, the rebellion was ignited. >

< Ignited in all but one, that is. In the man who seemed noblest & purest, this was not the case. Rebellion had been in his heart for years.

Finally [David] paused & spoke aloud to himself. "I have waited, Absalom. I have waited & watched for years. I have asked again and again, >

< 'What is in the heart of this young man?' Now I know. U will do the unthinkable. U will divide the very kingdom of God. All else was talk"

Men who go after Sauls among us often crucify Davids among us. Who, then, can know who is David & who is Saul? God knows. But He won't tell.

"What does this world need: gifted men and women, outwardly empowered? Or individuals who are broken, inwardly transformed?" ~ Gene Edwards

"Many pray for the power of God. More every year. Those prayers sound powerful, sincere, godly, and without ulterior motive. >

< Hidden under such prayer and fervor, however, are ambition, a craving for fame, the desire to be considered a spiritual giant. >

< The person who prays such a prayer may not even know it, but dark motives and desires are in his heart … in YOUR heart." ~ Gene Edwards

"God did not have - but very much wanted to have - men and women who would live in pain. God wanted a broken vessel." A Tale of Three Kings

The passing of time, and the way you react to a leader—be he David or Saul—reveals a great deal about YOU. ~ G. Edwards amazon.com/dp/B0055UIP9S/…

SUBMISSION: Gethsemane is simply that hour when you finally align your will with God's, when you accept and embrace … your crucifixion. >

< Any human daring to follow a divine path will come upon a Gethsemane. Each will tarry there until he realigns his will with divinity … >

< or he will completely miss the divine way of things. Acquiescence to destruction. That is Gethsemane. That is submission. ~ Gene Edwards

As a man is known by the company he keeps, so it is with a doctrine. (A.W. Pink) // If Error be harmless then Truth must be useless. (Booth)

Some reject doctrinal preaching as unloving and even obsolete. This is tragic, because Bible doctrine brings supernatural power when obeyed.

Paul said, “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine” (2 Ti 4:3) & no generation fulfils this Scripture better than ours.

Gospel writers tell us crowds were astonished at Jesus’ DOCTRINE – not b/c its STYLE was exceptional but b/c its SUBSTANCE was supernatural.

Doctrine is not Dogma. Dogma = MAN’S STATEMENT of truth, set forth in a creed. Doctrine = GOD’S REVELATION of truth, set forth in Scripture.

DOCTRINE determines: 1) CHARACTER (what we ARE - Ro 6:17-18), 2) BEHAVIOR (what we DO - 1 Ti 6:3-5), 3) DESTINY (where we GO - 1 Ti 4:16) >

< DOCTRINE = "that which is put forth as true, supported by the teacher" / Preaching without Bible doctrine turns sermons into supposition.

Why do we say "STANDARD" of holiness? A standard is defined as: 1) something established by authority as an EXAMPLE, 2) a test of QUALITY, >

< 3) a test for determining the AUTHENTICITY of something INTANGIBLE. / Tangible standards outside indicate INTANGIBLE work of God INSIDE; >

< they ARE an EXTERNAL sign that an AUTHENTIC work of salvation and sanctification has taken place. Basically, they are a "test of QUALITY."

IMPORTANCE OF LIFESTYLE CONVICTIONS: 1 Thessalonians 4:7-8 (NLT) God has called us to live HOLY LIVES, not impure lives. Therefore, … >

< … anyone who refuses to live by these rules is NOT DISOBEYING HUMAN TEACHING but is REJECTING GOD, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Living a holy LIFESTYLE is the “new normal” when you become a child of God. The whole POINT of the Apostolic lifestyle is to STAND OUT. >

Jesus said prophets can only be identified by their FRUIT, which will either cause people to walk according to God's laws OVER TIME, or not.

Rather than making us CONTENT to follow God’s commandments, false prophets speak to the idols in our hearts and make us COVET an easier way.

Jesus’ problem with the Pharisees was NOT that they appeared holy, but that their outer holiness was only a façade to camouflage inner sin.

Paul consistently taught external holiness, but condemned some for “having a FORM of godliness, but denying the POWER thereof” (2 Tim 3:5)

Jesus called Pharisees HYPOCRITES (“godless actors”) but distinguished between righteous principles taught & unrighteous actions committed.

“ALL therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, THAT OBSERVE AND DO; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” (Matt 23:3)

LEGALISM is basing one’s salvation on good works or imposing non-Biblical rules to EARN salvation. Bible strongly condemns it (Ro 3-4, Ga 3)

Right alternative to legalism not ABSENCE of God’s law but LOVE of it! We have RELATIONSHIP b/c of GRACE; RESPONSIBILITIES b/c of GRATITUDE.

The ONLY case where "external standards" could be Pharisaical or legalistic is when there is NO corresponding relationship with God INSIDE.

PHARISEEISM is rarer than some would have us believe. Those separated from the world in "externals" are usually DEEPLY in love with Jesus!

David & Solomon are one of the best examples of “generational transfer” from an older generation’s dream to a younger generation’s vision:

DAVID was a DREAMER who took a group of people that had been ruled by Saul and fashioned them into a HEALTHY kingdom.

SOLOMON was a VISIONARY who took an already healthy kingdom and wisely PERCEIVED how to make it an even more influential kingdom.

DAVID was a man of WAR. He was known for WORSHIP (spiritual EXPERIENCE was the critical element in his day).

SOLOMON was a man of PEACE. He was known for WISDOM (spiritual KNOWLEDGE was the critical element in his day).

DAVID had to battle the house of SAUL (manmade religion) to establish his kingdom.

SOLOMON had to battle ADONIJAH (a rebellious brother not willing to follow the will of his father David) to establish his kingdom.

David’s kingdom didn't achieve its golden age until Solomon took the throne, but there wouldn’t have been a Solomon without a David!

1/5 We encounter FOUR KINDS OF PROBLEMS in life, & each require a different response. God has a purpose behind every problem (Rom 8:28-31) …

2/5 TROUBLES - typically consequences of choices made by YOU (Gen 22:41, Psa 31:10, Psa 40:12). Deal with TROUBLES by REPENTING (Psa 18:6).

3/5 TEMPTATIONS - from SATAN to draw us away from God (Mat 26:41, 1 Cor 10:12-13, Jam 1:14). Deal with TEMPTATIONS by RESISTING (Jam 4:7).

4/5 TRESPASSES - hurts caused by sins of OTHERS (Jos 22:20, Eze 15:8, Luk 17:4). Deal with TRESPASSES by RELEASING offenders (Mat 6:14-15).

5/5 TRIALS - permitted by GOD to draw us closer to Him (Rom 5:3, Jam 1:2-3, Jam 1:12). Deal with TRIALS by REJOICING in them (1 Pet 1:7).

HAPPINESS only found 22X in the Bible. HAPPY in Scripture doesn’t mean “delighted, pleased, or glad.” It means “blessed or favored by God.”

However, the Bible uses words JOY, JOYFUL or REJOICE over 160X, & teaches that JOY comes from CHRIST inside, not from CIRCUMSTANCES outside.

10 Plagues = battle between Pharaoh & Jehovah. Much more than a show of God's power; each plague was a judgment upon a pagan Egyptian deity!

Ex 8:1 Pharaoh knew if the Israelites ever got out from under his control they would never willingly return, so he offered FOUR COMPROMISES:

1) Stay in Egypt (Ex 8:25); 2) Stay close to Egypt (Ex 8:28); 3) Leave w/o your family (Ex 10:11); 4) Leave w/o your possessions (Ex 10:24).

In Greek, the words for BELIEVE and OBEY are often used interchangeably, because the early Christians would NEVER do one without the other.

(cont) This is exactly why many salvation verses include the word “believETH” which means “a continuing or progressing state of believing.”

(cont) Many try 2 BELIEVE gospel w/o OBEYING gospel. BELIEVE = “accept as true” (mental assent) OBEY = "carry out orders” (RESULT of belief)

REPENT is a command! BE BAPTIZED is a command! And if you OBEY those commands, THEN "ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost!" (Ac 2:38)

@OneStopBlog 3 parts of GOSPEL defined by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 // 3 parts of APPLICATION of the Gospel defined by Peter in Acts 2:38

@Lukepaa No timeline on receiving HG b/c it is God's part, but Bible puts timeline on baptism - same day, same hour, immediately, i.e. ASAP!

@Lukepaa We have PRECEDENT in Bible - Ac 10:44 the HG fell on them, Ac 10:48 and he COMMANDED them to be baptized (obedience STILL required)

There is a difference between God's PROCESS and God's PROMISE. If we do not trust God in the PROCESS, then we are not worthy of the PROMISE.

God told Abraham, "I SWEAR I'm going to bless you!" (Heb. 6:13-14) Why? Because sometimes, it's going to LOOK like He is doing the OPPOSITE!

God let Satan tear down the hedge of BLESSING He had put around Job. But then Satan found ANOTHER hedge that JOB had built, unshakable FAITH

The most common Bible COMMAND is some variation of “Fear not!” // The most common Bible PROMISE is some variation of “I will be with you!"

TYPE A: Martha neglected Jesus even as she worked for Him. Why was Martha hurrying? Because Mary wasn't! No wonder Lazarus died prematurely.

The Bible doesn't say “resist temptation,” it says “resist the devil" (Ja 4:7). Resisting a thought doesn’t work; it actually reinforces it!

IGNORING temptation far more effective than fighting it! Principle of REPLACEMENT = overcome evil with good. Keep your mind stayed on JESUS!

Luke 10 - Jesus told about a man who went DOWN to Jericho and fell among THIEVES (don't know whether they were robbers or just bad friends).

They stripped him of his garments (Is 61:3, 61:10), wounded him (Is 1:6, Jo 10:10), & left him HALF DEAD (Ep 2:1-3). Looked alive but dying!

A PRIEST passed by on the other side (represented MORAL LAW). He didn't even stop to look, because the law had no mercy! (He 10:28, Ja 2:10)

A LEVITE came and looked, then passed by (represented CEREMONIAL LAW). Sacrifices only covered sin, couldn't deal with root! (He 10:4, 7:19)

But a SAMARITAN had compassion and helped the man. The Jews often mocked Jesus with this insult (Jo 4:9, 8:48). JESUS IS THE GOOD SAMARITAN!

If Jesus is Good Samaritan & wounded man is world, then where is the church? We are the INNKEEPER, taking care of people Jesus brings to us!

Samaritan gave innkeeper 2 PENCE (2 days wage) when He left. (2 Pe 3:8 / 1 day = 1000 years) Jesus went away for "2 days" but left us POWER!

Lu 10:35 - "When I come again, I will repay thee." / Jo 14:3 - "If I go & prepare a place for you, I will come again" / JESUS WILL REPAY US!

God may allow others 2 B wealthy yet supply your needs on a daily basis b/c He wants something far better for you – total dependence on Him.

God may let others be honored while keeping U hidden in obscurity - because He wants U to produce fruit that can only be grown in the shade.

God may let others get the credit for things you have accomplished - and all this will make your reward ten times as great when Jesus comes.

When U are truly delighted by God's peculiar jealous guardianship over your life, U will have found the vestibule of heaven in Jesus Christ.

EVERY CHURCH needs to help FUND the Great Commission! God hasn't blessed us to increase our standard of LIVING, but our standard of GIVING!

@melanishock I know you're already fired up after School of Missions, but the following is the #ColdHardFacts based on recent UPCI stats ...

21% of UPCI churches in North America give ZERO to Foreign Missions; another 22% give <$1000/year. That means 43% give less than $1000/year.

93% of our churches give 45% of our Foreign Missions offering. Just 7% of our churches give 55% of that offering. NO, they are not all BIG.

My kids learned 2 feed themselves as toddlers. If U say "I'm not being fed" it's YOUR fault. It isn't your pastor's job to study YOUR Bible!

Listening to sermons is second-hand knowledge; it can never replace first-hand study. It’s not enough to HEAR truth; you have to OWN truth.

In the OT (Ge. 2:6-7), MIST on dust + BREATH in dust = Living Soul. In the NT (Jo. 3:5) it still takes WATER + SPIRIT to birth new creation!

1 Co 9:24 - "So run that ye may obtain [the prize]." Not running FAST, but running 2 LAST. Have the GRACE 2 PACE yourself for the long haul.

Lam 2:14 MES - Your prophets courted U w/ sweet talk. They didn't face U w/ your sin so U could repent. Their sermons were wishful thinking.

We focus on HOLINESS BY SUBTRACTION (eliminating things from our lives). Could it be that God is more concerned about HOLINESS BY ADDITION?

@Chris_Hunter This doesn't at all minimize EXTERNAL holiness, it just puts it in a proper perspective - as an outgrowth of INTERNAL holiness

@Chris_Hunter Many see holiness as list of what THEY CAN'T DO (subtraction), but God sees it as list of what HE WANTS TO DO in us (addition)

@Chris_Hunter 2 Peter 1:1-11 is a good example of this - He says, "you already have the power you need" (v.3), "now ADD to your faith" (v.5)

In Bible times elders "sat at the gate." They spent YEARS talking 2 each other, building relationship; THAT is where their wisdom came from!

Judges 12:6 - During time of civil war, the Gileadites killed their Ephraimite brethren because they couldn't say "Shibboleth" the same way.

Temptation STARTS wherever you choose to put on the BRAKES, so you need to STOP far enough back from SIN that temptation is still RESISTIBLE

LUSTS are never satisfied; they always GROW when exercised. If we yield we don't satisfy appetite, we just make it easier 2 yield next time!

GREED: an assumption that it's all for my consumption ("If anything comes TO me, it's FOR me") That phony philosophy is rampant in churches!

We ask: "Is it RIGHT or is it WRONG?" But we can rationalize that almost anything is "right" for us. The best question to ask: "Is it WISE?"

PRAYER OF AN IMMATURE CHRISTIAN: "I would like to buy $3.00 worth of God, please. Not enough of God to explore my soul or disturb my sleep,

(con't) but just enough to equal a cup of warm milk or a snooze in the sunshine. I want ecstasy, not transformation; the warmth of the womb,

(con't) not a new birth. I want a pound of the Eternal in a paper sack. Yes, I would like to buy $3.00 worth of God, please." (Wilbur Rees)

Grace & EFFORT are not opposites; grace & EARNING are opposites! Working FOR your salvation = heresy; working OUT your salvation = maturity!

Heb. 5:13-14 "Every one that useth MILK is unskilful in the word: for he is a babe. But strong MEAT belongeth to them that are of full age."

MILK is a passive food, given to the child by the mother (the church). MEAT is an active food, hunted down & prepared by oneself for eating.

MILK is a basic or "comfort food" ("Somebody meet my needs!"). MEAT is an energy or "strength food" ("What can I do to help in my church?").

MILK is a pre-digested food (i.e. God spoke to Aaron through Moses). MEAT must be digested, so it takes greater “effort” by the individual.

MILK builds up the bones (underlying framework of spiritual life). MEAT builds up the muscles (essential activity of one's spiritual life).

MILK is truth of what Jesus did for me (salvation - Gospels & Acts). MEAT is truth of what Jesus is doing in me (sanctification - Epistles).

Nothing has to die to produce MILK, but something has to die to produce MEAT. A carnal Christian hasn't yet died to their own immature ways!

WHY DID JESUS CURSE THE FIG TREE? To answer that, answer this: What did Adam & Eve clothe themselves in, right after they sinned? (Gen. 3:7)

Jewish Literature says the Tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil was a FIG TREE - "the fig leaf which brought remorse to the world” (Midrash)

As Jesus walks into Jerusalem on the way to His crucifixion, He curses the SAME KIND OF TREE that caused mankind's slide into sin! (Mark 11)

The FIRST ADAM ate the fruit of the tree and brought death, but the SECOND ADAM could not find any figs to eat. He did not partake of sin!

Heb 4:15 - In all points tempted as we are YET WITHOUT SIN / 1 Cor 15:45 - First Adam made a living soul; last Adam made a quickening spirit

Jesus cursed the ROOT CAUSE of mankind's sin problem, leaving it withered & dead … for when the GOD-MAN speaks, the curse itself is cursed!!

The Bible is a TEXTBOOK on prayer. It teaches us that we need to pray. But we have forgotten that the WORDS of Scripture can BE our prayer!

Praying the Scriptures INVITES us to pray and INITIATES our prayer. It unlocks INTIMACY and breaks the INERTIA we sometimes feel in prayer.

Praying the Scriptures ILLUSTRATES how to pray and INSPIRES us as we pray. It ILLUMINATES our hearts and INSTRUCTS us in the wording to use.

Praying the Scriptures lends IMAGERY & INTENSITY to praying. It brings INTERCESSION & IMMORTALITY to our prayers. Have you prayed the WORD?!

Many treat the Psalms' exhortations like they are worship SUGGESTIONS or OPTIONS, to obey only if they fit one's personality or culture.

"When are you going to quit limiting your ministry with your words & start letting ME decide the boundary of what is possible?" (Willoughby)

The key EMOTION of worship is love. The key ATTITUDE of worship is surrender. The key ACT of worship is obedience. (Steve Willoughby)

WORSHIP IS ABOUT LOVE. Love isn't love without expression. No blessing without sacrifice; the church cost God a crucifixion. (S. Willoughby)

WORSHIP IS ABOUT LORDSHIP. It’s about who’s in charge. Worship requires three responses - physical, emotional, and material. (S. Willoughby)

There was a holy repulsion in the NT church, the last thing we think we need; we always try to attract. The NT church grew by repelling! ~VH

If NT church had overlooked sin while Satan sneaked into every phase of her life as we've done today, Christianity would've died in infancy.

The lambs today are so mixed with every other species that what was once a sheepfold has become a zoo. Pastors are 2 feed sheep, not wolves!

The NT church had a healthy, holy intolerance. We are paying an awful price today for our sweet tolerance of sin within the church. (Havner)

1 Cor 3:11-12 Other foundation can no man lay … if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble ...

GOLD, SILVER, PRECIOUS STONES: ETERNAL INVESTMENTS. (1) Are much more costly, (2) Are found at a much deeper level, (3) Refined by the fire.

WOOD, HAY, STUBBLE: TEMPORAL INVESTMENTS. (1) Can be purchased much cheaper, (2) Can be found on the surface, (3) Will not survive the fire.

MISSIONS: "Not called!" did you say? "Not heard the call," you should say. Put your ear to the Bible, & hear him bid you go! (William Booth)

No prayer, no power. Little prayer, little power. More prayer, more power. Much prayer, much power. Prevailing prayer, prevailing power!

DIRECTION, not INTENTION, determines DESTINATION. You will never DRIFT in a good direction; you will have to DISCIPLINE yourself to go there

Prayer is not something that you DO. Prayer is something that you ARE. Prayer flows automatically out of living sacrifices. (S. Willoughby)

Prayer is simply the verbal expressions of the meditations of your heart. So, NOT praying is the result of a dead sacrifice. (S. Willoughby)

God replaced DEAD sacrifices because they had limited value. They were too EASY to forget. You gave, then just walked away. (S. Willoughby)

A LIVING sacrifice is different. It requires DAILY maintenance & DAILY conversation. YOU'RE DECAYING IF YOU'RE NOT PRAYING. (S. Willoughby)

Matt 19:6 - The Pharisees want to know when it is PERMISSIBLE to leave a marriage - Jesus answers that He doesn't even think it is POSSIBLE!

Eph 4:26 - The danger of allowing the sun to set on unresolved ANGER is that, if the sun sets too many times, U forget what you're angry at!

What makes FRIENDSHIP great is what makes it dangerous. I'm repelled by rejection & attracted by acceptance, so I drop my guard w/ friends.

When I feel ACCEPTANCE, I am most open to INFLUENCE. But not all my friends are going the same direction - I must choose influencers wisely!

THE DIFFERENCE I got up early one morning, And rushed right into the day; I had so much to accomplish, That I didn’t take time to pray.

Problems kept tumbling about me, And heavier came each task; “Why doesn’t God help me?” I wondered. He answered: “You didn’t ask.”

I wanted to see joy and beauty, But the day toiled on, gray and bleak; I wondered why God didn’t show me, He said: “But you didn’t seek.”

I tried to come into God’s presence, I used all my keys at the lock; God gently and lovingly chided, “My child, you didn’t knock.”

I woke up early this morning, And paused before entering the day; I had so much to accomplish, That I had to take time to pray.

"@melanishock: He wakeneth morning by morning ... my ear 2 hear as the learned. Is 50:4 God teaches early morning classes. Don't skip them."

COMPROMISE: COM or CO = "together with" / PROMISE = "a declaration on which expectation is based" / WATCH WHO YOU CHOOSE FOR "CO-PROMISERS"!

Matt. 16:18 - Gates of ancient cities functioned as place of official decrees. Church can stop "decrees" of hell through prevailing prayer!

Matt. 16:19 - Our binding & loosing accomplishes on earth what is already willed in Heaven; we don’t MAKE it happen, we RELEASE it to happen

BINDING is not limited to our concept of something being tied up; it is more accurately understood by our concept of a “BINDING CONTRACT.”

Satan has blatant disregard for the Bible, the "CONTRACT" governing my life - but I can INSIST in prayer that he be BOUND to its provisions!

You are not just a helpless bystander! You are anointed & appointed by Heaven to INTERCEDE every time Satan sneaks across his boundary line!

God's will is ALWAYS done in Heaven, but SELDOM on earth. So we INTERCEDE: "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done ON EARTH as it is in HEAVEN."

John Bunyan (Puritan preacher) said, “We can do more than pray AFTER we have prayed, but we can not do more than pray UNTIL we have prayed.”

Ep 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; & that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: NOT OF WORKS, lest any man should boast.

Ep 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus UNTO GOOD WORKS, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Good works accomplish NOTHING before salvation ("NOT OF WORKS") - but good works are the point of EVERYTHING afterwards ("UNTO GOOD WORKS")!

We teach baptism by immersion b/c word “baptism” = “to immerse.” We teach biblical standards of holiness b/c word “holy” = “to be separate.”

Senior demon Screwtape to trainee Wormwood: "Old error in new dress is ever error nonetheless." (from "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis)

POWER UP! Two major NT Greek words describe spiritual "power"… (1) DUNAMIS = power to do things BEYOND your natural ability ("DOING" power);

(2) EXOUSIA = power NOT to do things your flesh ALREADY has the ability to do ("RESTRAINING" power), also the power to restrain Satan's work

CROSS is the ultimate example of EXOUSIA power (see John 10:18) - thankful for Jesus' DUNAMIS, even more for EXOUSIA that kept him on cross!

Flesh can already live unholy! To live HOLY we need DUNAMIS ("DOING power") but even more EXOUSIA ("RESTRAINING power") - 1 Cor. 6:12, 11:10

1 Cor. 11:10 ("EXOUSIA" on her head") - submitted woman has "RESTRAINING POWER" on her head - pictures her AUTHORITY in the Spirit in prayer

In Scripture, MEN are generally commanded to ACT HOLY; his "standards" provide much of the OFFENSIVE power of the church (i.e. DUNAMIS)

In Scripture, WOMEN are generally commanded to APPEAR HOLY; her "standards" provide much of the DEFENSIVE power of the church (i.e. EXOUSIA)

EVER NOTICE? If men ACT holy, women have less of a battle with temptation. If women APPEAR holy, men have less of a battle with temptation.

@apostolic2thebo INTERNAL ("action") standards are actually more difficult to live than EXTERNAL ("appearance") standards, in my experience.

@apostolic2thebo Apostolic MEN should stand out as much by their ACTIONS as Apostolic WOMEN stand out by their APPEARANCE. Very challenging!

"I'll become even more undignified, & humiliated in my own eyes" (2 Sam 6:22 NIV) Michal knew Palace Protocol; David knew Passionate Praise!

HUMILITY, humor, humiliation - all from same root. Nothing expands our capacity for humility like embarrassment. Learn to laugh at yourself!

The longer I live, the more I thank God for the DISAPPOINTMENTS in my life. Some of my WORST moments now serve as some of my BEST altars!

ANGER MANAGEMENT: Anger is always the SECOND emotion we feel. Find the SOURCE emotion & deal with the ROOT of your anger, not just SYMPTOMS.

ATT: WORRIERS! Most of our emotional problems are merely symptoms of ONE deep-rooted spiritual problem - a lack of TRUST in a sovereign God!

The bigger the opportunity the longer it takes - we think BIG w/o thinking LONG. "In due season we SHALL reap, IF we faint not." (Gal. 6:9)

God gave the "Ten Commandments" AFTER He set His people free. You don't need law when you are a SLAVE, you only need law when you are FREE.

God's rules are not a CONDITION of relationship, they are a CONFIRMATION of relationship. Rules w/o RELATIONSHIP always result in REBELLION.

Whose dog is in your fence? Was it yours once in the fence? NO! It was yours when you BOUGHT it. It's in a fence because it BELONGS to you!

The "10 Commandments" should be called the "10 Commitments" - we keep THEM because we love HIM. Rules R not to "get in" but b/c we "are in."

We each have our "Exodus story" - we were in bondage but God delivered us! And we've made our lifestyle changes out of GRATITUDE, not GUILT!

You cannot be FRUITFUL if you are not already SEED-FULL. (T.D. Jakes) … "Now the parable is this: The SEED is the WORD of God." (Luke 8:11)

RAPTURE: Bible simply talks about “caught up,” but "Rapture" became the unofficial title because it denotes a sense of JOY rather than FEAR.

(con't) Rapture won't be like a kidnapping! The sense of the word is like a child being suddenly swept into the arms of her laughing father.

(con't) It's a Holy Expectation … that in the next tick of the clock the Lord Jesus could descend from Heaven with a shout and call us Home!

(con't) 1 Thess 4:16 "The Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a SHOUT" … What's Jesus going to shout? Maybe He will shout "Enough!"

1/4 - Jude 1:11 - Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of CAIN & ran after the error of BALAAM & perished in the gainsaying of CORE.

2/4 - WAY OF CAIN: "I would rather kill my brother and leave those who gave me birth, than have to submit and bring my sacrifice God's way."

3/4 - ERROR OF BALAAM: "I've listened to critics of God's people long enough that I'm willing to join forces with them against my heritage."

4/4 - GAINSAYING OF CORE: "I don't think my elders have any more spiritual authority than I do, so I have no problem speaking against them."

The Pharisees ADDED to the Word of God; the Sadducees TOOK AWAY from the Word of God. And BOTH extremes still exist within the church today.

(con't) There has been well-deserved outcry about “Pharisees” in the church, but when we encounter "Sadducees" those same voices are silent!

BOLDNESS = behavior born out of belief. Ac 4:13 "When they saw the boldness of Peter & John they marvelled" Does YOUR boldness amaze anyone?

Temple veil = shadow / Jesus’ side = substance. When one ripped, it ripped the other. Not torn so God could get out, but so we could get in!

Aerodynamics doesn't eliminate law of gravity, it overcomes it. Grace doesn't eliminate law of sin, it overcomes it. Grace is that powerful!

“Run John, run” the Law commands; But gives me neither legs nor hands. Far grander news the Gospel brings; It bids me fly & gives me wings!

Baptism is an announcement of COVENANT, not just by U but by GOD! Not just U saying “I belong to Jesus” but JESUS saying “You belong to Me!"

Every Christian in your Bible was baptized in Jesus' name & spoke w/ tongues when they received the Holy Ghost. It was the EXPECTED pattern!

@OneStopBlog for.mu.la "a fixed METHOD for doing something" - Bible baptismal "formula" isn't incantation but IMMERSION into a NAME (Ro 6:3)

Book of Acts is the HINGE of the New Testament - it tells us what the church DID with what Jesus SAID. There would be no Epistles w/o Acts!

David had a “premature anointing” that was often difficult to navigate - he was anointed for a position that he hadn’t come into yet! You 2?

Satan fought David's ANOINTING because he was next in line for the throne - he wanted to mess him up before he could step into his AUTHORITY

We are majoring as never before on being broad-minded. That we have become so broad as to become pitifully shallow never seems to disturb us

Some experts in tolerance can be amazingly intolerant of those who don't share their broad-mindedness, but that doesn't disturb them either.

CARNALITY: You don't have 2 sin 2 be carnal. People who are carnal are simply those who make all their decisions based on their five senses.

WAIT for God's timing in your life! Many things that will be a blessing to you later on can be a curse to you now, if you get them too soon.

The point of salvation isn't that WE "accept Jesus as Savior" - that's not Biblical. The point is that HE accepts us when we obey the gospel

MEDIA has power to redefine “normal” - conveying not only what is ACCEPTED, but what is EXPECTED - thus becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy!

“More than Israel kept the Sabbath, the Sabbath kept Israel.” We see God’s commandments as RESTRICTIVE, but they are actually PROTECTIVE.

Couples don’t fall out of LOVE, they fall out of FORGIVENESS! Behind every case of marital dissatisfaction lies an issue that is unforgiven.

Satan’s most successful lie is also his oldest, that God's Word is optional or subject 2 interpretation by humans (Ge 3:1 “hath God said?”)

Romans = being saved; Corinthians = living saved; Galatians = thinking saved. But U can't be, live or think saved until you go through ACTS!

God develops the Fruit of the Spirit in your life by allowing U to go thru circumstances where you’re tempted to express the opposite trait!

Salvation is the most "elastic" word in the Bible. I WAS saved (Justified), I AM BEING saved (Sanctified), and I WILL BE saved (Glorified)

Justification SAVED me from sin's PENALTY. Sanctification SAVES me from sin's POWER. Glorification WILL SAVE me from sin's PRESENCE!

1 Th 5:3 "as travail upon a woman with child" … signs of times like labor pains - as deliverance gets close they get more frequent & intense).

When God gives a command there is power resident in it to fulfill it: Let there be light!! Let my people go!! Let him that is athirst come!!

Most common Bible command is a variation of “Fear not!” Most common Bible promise is a variation of “I will be with you!” If God be 4 me …!

Immature Christians say “I HAVE TO?" Maturing Christians say “I WANT TO.” Mature Christians say “I GET TO!” It’s a privilege to please God!

In the incarnation, God took on a human nature that He never had … so that in salvation, I could take on a divine nature that I never had!

Two impossibilities bookend His life - virgin's womb & empty tomb. Jesus came in a door marked "No Entrance" & left by one marked "No Exit."

Church can be like football - a few people on the field badly in need of rest & thousands of people in the stands badly in need of exercise.

Last 4 words in Acts ("no man forbidding him") are 1 word in Greek, AKOLUTOS. It means "UNSTOPPABLE," indicating the church was unstoppable!

We never achieve God's will by breaking His laws, violating His principles or ignoring His wisdom. His direction begins with our submission

In shadow of HURT, forgiveness seems a decision 2 reward my enemy. In shadow of CROSS, it is merely a gift from 1 undeserving soul 2 another

WORSHIP: The only part of church services that God gets anything out of. Ever thought of that? He doesn't learn anything from our preaching!

It isn't resolution of circumstances but evolution of character that God is after. Most Uncomfortable Situations = Most Comforting Psalms.

SEASONS: Sometimes learning to follow is better than learning to lead, and learning to handle failure better than learning to handle success

Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death! Go after a dream that is destined to fail without Divine intervention.

Christianity is not life AFTER death; it is life INSTEAD of death. Eternal life is in you from the very moment you experience the new birth.

SUB-MISSION: Your mission "under" someone else's mission. You can't submit when you agree (that's just agreement!) - only when you disagree.

Tolerance says, "You must approve of what I do." Love says, "I must do something harder; I will love you even if your behaviour offends me."

Tolerance says, "You must let me to have my way." Love says, "I must do something harder; I ask you to do right, because it's best for you."

Tolerance says, "You must agree with me." Love says, "I must do something harder; I will tell you the truth, because it will set you free."

Legitimate illegitimate sin = attempting to meet a legitimate need in an illegitimate way; a quick fix instead of God's plan /Mark Batterson

BOREDOM is the seedbed of sin; we sin because we have nothing better to do, literally! If you're busy serving God you'll be too busy to sin.

It's NOT an "opportunity" if U have to compromise your integrity - w/o integrity U can't fulfill your destiny b/c integrity IS your destiny!

Why is it we wait to do wrong until no one is watching but wait to do right until someone is watching? Our sinful nature at work either way!

The fear of man bringeth a snare (Pro 29:25) Who have U let subconsciously control your life that U would never consciously give control to?

DECIDE. Decidere ="to cut off." Homo-cide. Sui-cide. Decisions demand DEATH, dying to 1000 options, choosing 1. Decisions separate: DE-CIDE!

The sick need a physician but the well want out of bed! If we preach about sickness but never about health the recovered never get stronger.

You get addicted to painkillers when you keep taking them after the pain is gone. Ever think the church might be addicted to encouragement?

WORSHIP first appears when Abraham takes wood, fire and a KNIFE. Anybody can build a fire - but worship without sacrifice is just a cookout!

SERVANTHOOD: How do you know you have a servant's heart? When people treat you like a servant and you don't get irritated by it you're there

SACRIFICE: You can't. Because you'll be rewarded in Heaven! Giving up the temporary for the permanent isn't a sacrifice, it's an investment.

How could God allow an eternity in Hell? That's how long and how much you would have to suffer to pay for your own sins if you reject Jesus!

"The greatest missionary is the BIBLE in the mother tongue. It needs no furlough and is never considered a foreigner." ~ William Townsend

You can't make a missionary of one who does nothing at home. He that will not serve the church at home, cannot lead a church anywhere else.

Great Commission not option to be considered but command to be obeyed. // Qualification for missions not love for souls but love for Christ!

Every Christian is either a missionary or an imposter. // Every Christian who is not called to go is called to send other Christians to go.

Millions haven't heard of Jesus. We ought not to ask, “Can I prove that I OUGHT to go?’ but “Can I prove that I OUGHT NOT to go?” ~ Spurgeon

The question is not, ‘Will THEY be saved if we don't send them the gospel?’ but ‘Are WE saved if we don't send them the gospel?’ ~ Spurgeon

"There are only three kinds of Christians when it comes to world missions: zealous goers, zealous senders, and disobedient." ~ John Piper

"If there was ever any one point in which the Christian church ought to keep its fervor at a white hot heat, it is concerning missions. >

< If there be anything about which we cannot tolerate lukewarmness it is in the matter of sending the gospel to a dying world." ~ Spurgeon

"I have but 1 candle of life to burn & I would rather burn it out in a land filled w/ darkness than in a land flooded w/ light" ~ J Falconer

People say, "I want a heart 4 missions." I say, "Jesus tells you how. Put your money in missions & your heart will follow." ~ Randy Alcorn

"People talk of the sacrifice I have made spending much of my life in Africa. AWAY WITH THE WORD SACRIFICE! Say rather it is a privilege. >

< Foregoing the common conveniences of this life is nothing when compared with the glory which shall be revealed in and for us in Heaven. >

< I HAVE NEVER MADE A SACRIFICE." ~ David Livingstone // When he died while kneeling in prayer, Britain wanted to give him proper burial. >

< African tribe finally relented, but cut out his heart first and sent this note: "You can have his body, but his heart belongs in Africa."

"If God would grant to us VISION the word ‘sacrifice’ would disappear from our lips; we would hate the things that now seem so dear to us; >

< our lives would suddenly be too short; we would despise time-robbing distractions & charge Hell with all our energies in Christ's name." >

Many in the church talk of the SECOND coming and never consider that half the world has never heard of the FIRST coming. ~ Oswald J. Smith

The measure of a church is not how many it SEATS but how many it SENDS. // Best remedy for a sick church is to put it on a missionary diet.

A church that says NO to missions is not just saying NO to men & leaving them in their sins. It is also saying NO to God's greatest concern!

Direct quote from one of our new believers at CCC: "What I thought was strength was simply weakness without trial." That's profound thinking

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable (1) for Doctrine - what to believe, (2) for Reproof - how NOT to behave, ...

... (3) for Correction - what NOT to believe, (4) for Instruction in Righteousness - how to behave (2 Tim 3:16) Preaching must do 1 of the 4

FASCINATING FACT: It takes 90 gallons of water to baptize an average-sized Christian, and only 9 drops of rain to keep him home from church.

BIRTH: Mom brought U 2 church. WEDDING: Spouse brought U 2 church. FUNERAL: Friends bring U 2 church. // Why not come on your own sometime?!

Many church goers are like a hitchhiker's thumb: "You buy the car, pay for repairs and insurance, fill it with gas, & I'll ride with you. >

< But if things don't suit me, I'll bail out. And if you have an accident, I'll probably sue. This thumb is always out for a better ride."

You don't have to go to church to be a Christian. You don't have to go home to be married either. But your relationship surely works better!

Seen on a Bible Cover: "WARNING: Prolonged use of Holy Scripture may result in maturity, wisdom, character, holiness, and eternal life." :-)

PEOPLE: "Some people are very much like old wheelbarrows; half full of dirt, useful only when pushed, and very easily upset." - Vance Havner

APPETITE: "He that looketh on a plate of ham and eggs to lust after it, hath already committed breakfast with it in his heart." ~ C.S. Lewis

“Autobiography in Five Short Chapters” by Porcia Nelson (next 5 Tweets - sorry, but too good not to share) - enjoyed my 1st week on Twitter!

Ch.1 – I walk down the street. Deep hole in sidewalk. I fall in. I’m lost, I'm helpless. It isn’t my fault. Takes forever to find a way out.

Ch.2 – I walk down the same street. Deep hole in sidewalk. Pretend not to see. Fall in again. Not my fault. Still takes long time 2 get out.

Ch.3 – I walk down the same street. Deep hole in sidewalk. I see it, but still fall in. It’s a habit. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Ch.4 – I walk down the same street. Deep hole in sidewalk. I walk around it.

Ch.5 – I walk down another street.

STEVE WILLOUGHBY: "Satan, you don't scare me. Because you are not the Lord of me. You have no authority in my life except by permission. >

< You can't kill, hurt or destroy the eternal part of me. I belong to Jesus. He is my redeemer, my rescuer, my restorer and my savior. >

< He is my Lord by choice. I choose Him. I reject everything about you. Jesus has all power and dominion, and you never get the final say."

STEVE WILLOUGHBY: "As for this Jesus? I trust Him. I love Him. I love His will, His ways & His truth. I love His doctrine & His holiness. >

< Jesus, You are the God of power & strength, the God of 'suddenly.' You are the God of extraction & escape, the God of rescue & return. >

< I am confident in Your love. I will not fear because perfect love casts out all fear. To You be dominion & honor & glory forever. Amen."
